An injury treatment story: Plantar Fascitis

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 | Deep Tissue, Featured, Massage, injury treatment | No Comments

I had a massage client once who had plantar fascitis as well as “no cartilage in her knees.” (quotes means it’s her that said that)

She was somewhere around 65 years old at the time, and I was about 2 years into my massage career and around the age of 23. (I’m 28 at the time of this post)

Long story short: she was thinking of going into surgery because the pain was so bad.

I told her to wait and give me a try before going under the knife. I explained about excess scar tissue and the like.

She gave it a try.

After 3 sessions she barely had pain and after about 7 sessions she decided not to see me anymore because she never got the pain again.

The sessions happened over the course of about 10 months with most of them being within 6 weeks - when she first started to see me.

I thought that was pretty awesome - especially since she was like 65 years old at the time. She was on her feet a lot too - did accounting and volunteering heavily at her church.

Her knees didn’t hurt by the end of her sessions with me as well.

In Summary -don’t get surgery for plantar fascitis or for carpal tunnel syndrome, for that matter.

Try massage first.

please

for the love of god.

Spiritual Retreat

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 | Business Insights, Featured, healthly living, stress | 2 Comments

The time has come for me to take a break. I”ll be up in a cabin in the woods for the next 2 weeks while my buddie the yoga master Mollie Wood holds down the fort.So often in life we seem to be in a race against time. We always think that there’s no time to get away. not enough money and time to get away and just do nothing but meditate or read spiritual books. I say that there are times in a person’s life where thy cannot afford NOT to go away.I will still do massage after… I love to be in practice - it humbles and inspires me. But I will be thinking alot about the plans I’ve only hinted at. I have been thinking an overhaul in the way and patterns of my life is needed. To continue the routine I’ve had for a while is out of the question. Things need to change and maybe from the outside they will not look so different and maybe they will.I will be developing my spiritual practice, plans for classes, counseling and I will possibly be facilitating my own spiritual retreats. Energy is needed for these things and when all my energy is going into being present for my clients and trying to just get by and survive -there’s little left for much else - let alone the birthing of a new lifestyle and career.Feel free to leave a comment about any interest you may have in these new developments or to just give me support. I send you all lots of love and good healing vibes!

Seattle Massage Goddess goes effin’ nuts on God, Change… to be continued…

There’s lots of space between posts this time.

I “shouldn’t” go this long without posting. need that constantly updated material, right? keep up with the Jones’s, or something like that.

I tend to go long periods of time off-line because of, well, a good many reasons. Many of them are “not serving me” as one could say.

Consistently updated and RELEVANT material.

Like new classes I’ve cooked up on teaching the general public how to give a good massage.

I interface with the web much like I interface with most of my life: on a rather intimate level.

I’ve tried many times to just “let her rip” and share all my random thoughts and interests, opinions, rants, advice as well as great notes on my massage injury treatment experience and my adventures in Cranio-sacral. I want to share what I’m up to but i have to admit - it scares me.

I’ve talked of this in previous posts. I have been trying to give an impression of my self and my business that “Really counts” or perhaps pulls a great many to my doorstep. I want to look good and sort of “tell” people what to think about me.

I think all that’s come across is that I get great reviews and need to post more often.

I know a ton about massage and injury treatment. I know a great deal about intimacy, god, sex and drugs. I know about how these things form the body over 10, 20, 30, 70 years. I get really random.

This sort of salad-tossed thinking really stops me from getting posts out on this bloody blog. Besides that… I don’t think I get SEO ratings for shit, so why try. I should make this post include the words massage, seattle, capital hill and fucking nuts on top of it all.

And now I’m going to start talking about God. I’ve been talking about kink all this time. At least on a private level as far as discussion groups, friend or client conversations,,, at tea here and there. It’s a part of my life as I am deeply immersed in the dark sub-culture worlds of kink, polyamory, swing, bdsm, fetish, goth and burner communities.

Seems appropriate to just choose more and more taboo subjects to razz people and myself with.

This all came from my own process of having to admit to myself that I need to do more than give massage all the time. OH no! I was a bit scared and that was 2 weeks ago.

Since then I’ve chosen to dig deep and look at myself. I want to be happy with my job! I want to have fun, I want to use my brain more than my body… what is there for me to do? counseling, directing and consulting with newly-grad LMP’s…

How to get Best results from your Massage LMP

Thursday, March 20th, 2008 | Deep Tissue, Featured, Massage, Seattle Events | No Comments

The best way to get the greatest massage from a great Licensed Massage Practitioner is to book well in advance.

I have always performed the best massages when my clients book in advance. It’s not easy to explain, but having an idea of who I’m massaging in a month from now seems comforting somehow.

For me, I have my own reasons why booking in advance are my favorite ways to manage my schedule. For other LMP’s - they have other reasons for wanting advance booking but I have found that it’s a common preference.

I have a Business Support Group for LMP’s once in a while. The last one I did (besides today) was in November. I posted it about 2 months before it was going to happen.

I had great attendance. Today’s group was posted 3 weeks ago… something like that. And no one showed up :(!

I should have known. Massage therapist’s need lots of time to sort out their schedules in order to make time for things like a group meeting thing.

Ah! My fellow massage therapists! We’re often such an archaic and loopy bunch!

But we are good at what we do! Most people I know are very glad there are people crazy enough to call themselves Massage Therapists and do this massage work. I’m glad too. I love getting massages and I know to book in advance. Same day appointments are silly… if you get them, you’re either paying too little for bad massage, you’re very lucky and God said you needed a massage today or you’re paying a metric ton of cash for a damn good rub and a massage artist to make time for your butt (literally) TODAY.

You get what you pay for. :)

Eric Koszyk From Eric Koszyk. Wow! What can I say? Sierra is a truly gifted person and therapist. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about massage. It helps that she is extremely intuitive and a very caring human being. Her space on Broadway is very warm, comforting and inviting.

As a fellow massage therapist, I highly recommend her, especially if you are looking for extensive deep tissue work which she is amazing at. You will leave her place wiser; her treatments will change your life.

Joe Shirley From Joe Shirley I still remember the first massage I got from Sierra over six months ago. My neck was chronically bugging me, and my carpal tunnel thing was acting up. She asked my permission to go for it. I said yes. It hurt. She told me to trust her, and I did. And both my neck and wrist felt great afterwards. She went right through that crap and out the other side. Amazing.

Matt HansonFrom Matt Hanson Sierra is fantastic! I felt she was really attentive to the needs I expressed about my upper-back and shoulders. I was really impressed that she could identify other problems spots quickly and how they positively affected those areas that were bothering me most. I have had several massages and she has the strength and understanding to do a incredible job.

Dennis DildayFrom Dennis Dilday I’ve had close to a hundred massages from more than a dozen different therapists and I can say Sierra’s are unique and wonderful. She relates and interacts with the layers of facia in a way others can’t. While determined to get a response from the tissues, Sierra is also tuned into her patient and keeps the experience pleasant and interesting. Clinically, she’s both confident and competent.
